Rene Molenkamp - President

Dr. René Molenkamp is a reflective leadership practitioner on the graduate faculty at University of San Diego. He comes to this role through the intensive, experiential leadership development programs he designs and delivers primarily to international professionals from globally recognized organizations. He has served as a coach and consultant for the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland for more than a decade. He has directed outdoor education experiences, coordinated elements of an MBA program, and serves as core faculty for Mobilizing People, a leadership program for high potential international corporate executives. René did undergraduate studies in economics and law in the Netherlands and in philosophy in Germany. He received his Masters of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and his PhD in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Maryland. As a former Jesuit priest and psychotherapist, he uses these previous professional roles to inform his work as an international leadership consultant and executive coach.

 

 

 

   

Jeremy Nichols, CPA - Treasurer

Jeremy Nichols is a CPA and has lived in the San Diego area since 2009. He grew up in upstate New York, attended Siena College in Albany, NY and worked in the Albany area before leaving to come to San Diego.  His professional background is as an auditor and tax preparer for local and regional CPA firms. He is a licensed CPA (NY and CA) and Certified Fraud Examiner. 

 

He has worked with a number of not-for-profit organizations both as an auditor/advisor, and through his contributions as a board member. He has worked with a diversity of not-for-profit organizations including healthcare organizations, membership associations, service organizations, and foundations. 

 

Outside of his professional career, he enjoys mountain biking, running, and tasting the wonderful craft beers that San Diego has to offer. 

  

Marc Smits - Secretary

Marc Smits holds a Bachelor’s of Science from California Polytechnic University, Pomona in Civil Engineering. He has worked as an Environmental Engineer/Project manager for the past 20 years, and is currently an environmental engineer and project manager at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He previously served for two years on the Board of Directors for Friends and Helpers of Mother Berenice, a charity to support people with Hansen’s Disease in Ecuador. He began playing guitar in church choirs at 18, and has performed and recorded with his former band, The Vagabond Heroes. Mr. Smits volunteers providing hospice care, plays music with the inmates at the Otay detention Facility, and volunteers serving the homeless. He currently serves on the RMC Board of Directors with interests in expanding outreach activities. 

 

 

  

Steve Wedel - General Member

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Steve Wedel worked as a scientist for ten years for San Diego-based bio-tech company IDEC Pharmaceuticals, focusing on immunological-based treatments for cancer. After graduating from California Western School of Law in 2001, magna cum laude, Steve focused on representing disabled individuals in lawsuits pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, fighting discrimination in the form of physical barriers that disabled individuals face on a daily basis. During his six years practicing ADA law, he argued in front of the Ninth Circuit of Appeals three times, and was successful in establishing new law regarding deterrence-based injuries and standing for disabled individuals.

He has also worked in the areas of insurance law, employment law and for a short time worked for a firm that was at the forefront of fighting mortgage and foreclosure fraud.

Steve began his career as court-appointed counsel for both parents and minors involved in Child Welfare Services cases in 2011 with Dependency Legal Group. He joined Children’s Legal Services at its founding in the fall of 2016, and has solely represented foster youth ever since.

On his off-time, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, as well as his large furry pack – three dogs and two cats. He also enjoys writing and has completed a screenplay, The Art of War.

   

Rich Geisler - General Member (Past President)

Rich Geisler is a Lawyer, teacher and real Estate Broker in San Diego. Rich has over a decade of local experience in dealing with land sales, contracts, development permitting and entitlements and local municipal decision making. His career in both the public sector working for then Council President Scott Peters and private sector as Vice President of J.Whalen Associates, Inc. have given him the necessary experience to make thoughtful and measured decisions on issues of public policy. Rich has vast non profit experience as a founder, board member, volunteer, advocate and business lawyer. Rich currently sits as the co-founder and executive board member for the International Children’s Cancer Foundation and as the Board President for the Recreational Music Center. He has been a part of SEDC since 2008 and has extensive background in dealing with redevelopment issues.  

 

In 2008 Rich was also accepted as a member of that LEAD San Diego class. Rich has taken his varied business and volunteer experiences and applied it in all of his career endeavors, most recently founding The Indie Law Group (www.nonprofit-lawyer.com). The Indie Law Group is a general practice civil law firm that specializes in personal and business civil matters as well as assisting non profit corporations with their legal and business needs. Rich enjoys his professional work and his civil engagement and volunteerism as well as teaching business law and management and policy courses at the University of Phoenix.

Parking is available on Truxtun Road or in the adjacent lot in front of the Von's shopping center.
