The Doghouse

  icon_learnmore_36

DOGHOUSEBAND LEADER: Jason Rain

BAND BIOGRAPHY:

This blues and classic rock band was started by adults who took a blues class together in 2015. Their instructor, Jason, joined their jam sessions on drums and they soon decided to form an official band with guidance from Jason. Their name is based on band members who sometimes forgot to practice and being put in the "doghouse".

Members have changed over years, including moving from a male to a female lead vocalist and from two keyboardists to one. However, previous members often return as "guest stars" to help out at shows. Current members include a father and son with John on piano (who took up piano at the age of 60!) and Mike on guitar.

Their songs range from classic blues like "Stormy Monday" to contemporary rock blues like "Pride and Joy" and classic rock such as "Stop Draggin' My Heart" and even some 80's flare like "Rebel Yell". The Doghouse is all about having fun, challenging themselves to perform at new levels and enjoying a sense of community.

scott Scott (Guitar):
Scott is the parent of a student in the RMC Band The Wild Californians (Kimberly) and is a long-time musician going back decades to the 80's where he lived with members of Guns N' Roses. Talk about some serious street cred! He has crafted a legend for himself and it goes as follows:

Raised by lumberjacks from an early age, he killed his first grizzly bear before the age of seven. Shortly thereafter, having become bored chopping down ancient redwoods with a single blow and winning endless knife fights, he caught a Trailways bus to Daytona, where he was discovered by NASA while rustling cattle. He became America's first Astronaut-Cowboy. While on one of his most extensive voyages to circumnavigate the rings of Uranus, he was exposed to high doses of radiation as he played his guitar between daily 16-hour naps. Leading experts unanimously agree that this is the most likely reason for his lingering, uncontrolled obsession with guitar. However, no one can agree as to why, at this point in his all too brief history, he is not a better player!
 Rebecca Doghouse Rebecca (Vocals):
Rebecca has been a huge supporter of RMC over the years. Her son takes private lessons and has taken part in our Wind Ensemble. She joined The Doghouse in 2016 as the Lead Vocalist. A native Texan, Rebecca adds her southern soul to her role in the band. She has been singing for as long as she can remember, and is a natural-born mockingbird. She is mostly self-taught, although she did take lessons in piano, drums and conga in her formative years.

She was a "closet singer" and did not come out of her shell until she was in her 20's jamming with friends. They formed a band, playing covers and a handful of originals at open mic nights, and then larger gigs, and eventually played downtown at San Diego's SuperBowl Fest to a crowd of thousands! Rebecca gained tremendous stage experience playing with seasoned musicians as a percussionist and backup vocalist in two well-known local cover bands, The Steely Damned and Rockola.

Rock-star and mom by night, she teaches learning technology at San Diego State University as her "day job".
Kristie Doghouse Kristie (Guitar and Bass):
Kristie's daughter Delilah is in the RMC Band The Wild Californians. She took piano and guitar lessons as a child and after a 30-year hiatus, she decided to start taking music lessons again five years ago. She began playing classical Spanish guitar but has recently switched to electric guitar and bass since joining The Doghouse. Her favorite music genres are classical, flamenco, blues, funk and country.
 John Doghouse John (Piano):
John woke up one day after his 60th birthday with a dream to play the piano. He spent almost two years teaching himself scales and getting his hands to cooperate. After reading an article in the newspaper about RMC, he visited and shortly therafter began taking lessons in blues and jazz piano. About a year later, his teacher encouraged him to join a band and he and his son (Mike) soon became member of the Doghouse doing blues and rock covers.
 Mike Doghouse Mike (Guitar):
Mike's main instrument is the electric guitar. He started playing in 1998 after he graduated from high school. He studied it for seven years focusing on theory, songwriting, and performance. His favorite music performance was playing the saxophone at the age of 12 at high school. He and his friend never practiced, so his teacher put them in the back and told them to "fake it".

He started playing in The Doghouse because he wanted his father's music teacher to arrange a song that they could perform together... and the next thing he knew, he was in a blues band with his father (John)!
